Controlling Your Subconscious

subconsciousThe subconscious is that part of your brain that controls you without you ever noticing. The subconscious makes up for most of the activity in your brain, the conscious mind is only the tip of the iceberg. So how do we take control of this massive portion of our mind?

The answer isn’t simple, because there are so many different ways to work with your subconscious. But I can sum them all up in one way; Exploration of consciousness.

Below are a few examples of routes you can take to explore consciousness. Different people will have different preferences.

 

Lucid Dreaming

What better way to meet your subconscious than in your dreams? Your dreams are driven by the subconscious. Even when you take conscious control in a lucid dream (A conscious dream, a dream in which you are aware it is a dream), it is still your subconscious which does the work. Let’s put aside the fun aspects of lucid dreaming for a moment. What implications does this have here?

Well, you can talk to your subconscious and find out more about what it knows, by simply asking a dream character. You can create a character which you think has knowledge about a certain area of yourself, and it basically creates a portal into that area of your subconscious, for you to interact with. You can even directly ask your subconscious to change things. Bad habits, conditioned beliefs, personal limitations.

I’ve only scratched the surface here but I hope you can see the value of Lucid Dreaming when it comes to taking control of oneself.

Psychology

Learning the psychology of yourself is another way to explore consciousness and make you more self-aware, and thus putting you in control.

  • NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is a set of scientific techniques designed to help you organize your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and language.
  • Carl Gustav Jung explores the psychology of so many ancient wisdoms, it’s unbelievable. You should definitely check some of it out.

And there is a whole world of more psychology to dig your teeth into. It helps to understand the human being, seeing as we are living as humans right now.

Enlightenment

Enlightenment is also an exploration of consciousness and awareness. You don’t get to fly like superman like in lucid dreams, but you can free yourself from suffering, and free yourself from “The Matrix”. You transcend the physical and therefore watch the physical from the eye of truth. It becomes easy to notice the pesky things your mind does. Once you notice something, you can usually control it. Just like lucid dreaming where you know it’s a dream so you can control it.

The funny thing about this however, is that with enlightenment, the idea of control can just dissolve. You see clearly that no matter what you do, it is a conditioned response in the brain. Even the decision to uncondition yourself is conditioned. This then seems like a paradox. You gain control, and lose control at the same time. In time you see it’s not a paradox at all, it’s just two different dimensions of thinking.

Meditation

There are many types of meditation, but meditation in general allows us to quiet our mind to such a level that, in life, we become more sensitive to the subtleties of the mind. Mindfulness comes naturally with practice of any meditation. Mindfulness puts you in the driver’s seat.

General Spirituality

While psychology, lucid dreaming, meditation and enlightenment can be proven to oneself very easily, every other spiritual practice is very difficult to prove, even to oneself, apart from naturally psychic people who can easily prove it to themselves. However the benefits can be easily proven to oneself. I personally look out for proof all the time, and I just keep a side note of it. I’ve got a lot of proof, but nothing I can take to a science journal just yet, but I would love to manage such a miracle. Mostly I use certain spiritual practices in order to work with my subconscious (and therefore possibly also with Spirit). Flexing the “psychic muscles” in the brain brings a lot of insight no matter what.

Every spiritual practice I know of, involves taking control of oneself in one way or another. Connection with the subconscious is critical in a lot of practices. Some people talk to non-physical entities such as spirit guides, angels, ascended masters, E.T.s, faeries and more. Spirits communicate with us via the subconscious, if you believe such a thing. But when you successfully do this, the benefits are clear, as you can be given genuine insight and guidance that helps you in some way. Whether the insight came from yourself or from Spirit, you can determine if it is beneficial by first allowing it.

Void Meditation – Get in Touch with Nothingness

Void MeditationHere is a meditation which can be extremely beneficial. All meditation is beneficial, but this meditation has a highly enlightening side-effect. At the end of the day, the void is where our true sense of self lies. You don’t need to understand that for the meditation to be beneficial. You also don’t need to understand it to feel awesome while you meditate on this. So, give it a try and see how it feels.

Also, if you want complete stillness during your meditation, you can use this to achieve it. The void is always still!


The meditation:

1)  Turn your focus inward to the void in the background of your consciousness. It should feel like you are pointing your focus behind your eyeballs. You have vision, but we want to look at the void around and behind that field of vision. Don’t think about your brain, just look behind your perception and you will notice the void.

2) Just examine the void a little bit, get used to the fact that there is indeed a void. Get used to the fact that there is somethingness in front, and nothingness behind.

3) Now, imagine the void expanding. Expand it to cover your whole body.

4) Now just rest in the feeling that your whole body is pervaded and surrounded by this void. If done right, this will feel blissful beyond words.


You can take it one step further and imagine the void expanding to cover the whole universe, and rest in that feeling of oneness with everything. If you choose to do this part, at least stay on step 4 for a few moments and let it sink in first.

The truth is, nothingness is always there. We know somethingness all to well but we never look at the nothingness surrounding and pervading it.  This meditation allows us to get in touch with that side of existence. It also allows us to get in touch with our true peaceful nature.

How to be Still and Silent in Meditation

Countless people struggle to remain still in meditation.  Everywhere I see basically the same complaint, “I can’t quiet my thoughts”. The truth is we are human and we have a brain that thinks, it can never truly be silent. But we do have constant access to true silence.

The answer is so simple. First you must recognize the stillness of the true self.  The true self is that part of you which is always watching your thoughts and senses. The true self is pure awareness quietly watching.  The true self is the one who perceives perceiving. Take a moment to notice it right now, you are reading this page but something is watching you do it. You are watching you do it. You are watching even the watching of it. Thoughts are also there, and you’re watching them too from a place of pure awareness.

Turn your focus inward and look at the pure awareness. It should feel like there is a void in the background of your consciousness. Take a moment to investigate that void, how close is it to you? How close is that infinite stillness to you?

Well you should realize that you are constantly being bathed in stillness. Feel that stillness pervade your entire being. When you meditate, bring yourself back to the stillness. Pull yourself into the void. Or just point your focus into the void. Everything else can just fall away naturally. Any thoughts that appear can just pass you by like a cloud.

So it’s no longer about “becoming silent”, it’s about “noticing silence”. You are already the stillness you seek.

Life Getting You Down?

Life is tough sometimes. We all go through some form of suffering at some point in life. Some people suffer more than others. Any number of things can trigger suffering in a person. Sometimes things get so bad that all we can think about is how to get released from it. So, how can we become free from suffering without committing suicide?

First you’ve gotta know who you are. If you are the one who is suffering, let’s really take a look at you, the subject. You are witnessing suffering. There is a suffering going on, and there is a witnessing of that suffering. Notice that. Separate the suffering (the object) from the witness (the subject). Suffering happens in the mind. Are YOU the mind? No you are watching the mind. The mind is an object to the subject. Your true self is the pure witness of thoughts and senses, the pure awareness in which all things are perceived. Thoughts and senses arise in front of you.

Now that you’ve divided your self from your thoughts and senses, can the thoughts and senses touch your self? Can you, your self, be touched at all?  Are you, the pure awareness, upset about anything? Are you angry about anything? Do you have any opinions about anything at all? Well no, pure awareness is completely quiet, completely still.

“But I still have a mind! It still suffers! How can I be free from suffering!!?”

Yes we can’t get rid of the mind, it still has the power to create feelings and thoughts which feel like suffering. But what happens when we pull our sense of self back to the safe space of the true self is, we no longer identify with the suffering and all these things just start to float away. We begin to see the truth of a lot of our own mind’s inner workings. We begin to see that most of our suffering is caused by this false identity in our head (the ego, the inner voice). We become free from suffering when we stop putting our identity into the person.

Suffering is caused only by believing you are the person. When you believe you are the person, your whole sense of self gets entwined with the feelings and thoughts. So untwist that by just observing, as the pure witness. Observe your thoughts from this place. Watch life from this place. Things get stressful? Bring yourself back to this still space and observe.

The best thing about knowing your true place in awareness is, you just know the whole time, that everything is ok, because you know that you are just perfect in your perfect place. You have total access to this infinite peace. Doesn’t matter what’s going on, you know you are ok.

Life is a Dream, Get Lucid!

There are many ways you can come to the conclusion that life is a dream.  Think about any one of these and you’ll realize that waking life is just as unreal as the dream. Or you’ll realize that dreams are just as real as waking life.

If you know what the True Self is, you know that life is simply a bunch of appearances. And what is a dream? A bunch of appearances. Whether you’re in a dream or in waking life, YOU are the unchanging witness of a bunch of appearances. Thoughts, sights, sounds, feelings, smells, tastes all appear in front of YOU, the pure awareness. just the same in dreams as they do in waking life. The only difference is that in waking life you use your senses to create a world in your consciousness, in dreams you use your subconscious to create it.

But, do you think that’s a tree you’re seeing? No, you’re perceiving the seeing of a tree. Go over and touch the tree, now you’re perceiving the touching of a tree.  All of your experience happens in your perception, nowhere else.

Did you know that matter is held in a quantum wave function until collapse due to observation? Basically things only exist in physical reality when there is an observer. To me this reinforces the fact that all exists only in consciousness. [UPDATE] I’ve just been made aware that this may have actually been proven wrong. A better way to feel consciousness in everything is to notice that the void in the background of your consciousness, that is you, is closer than close with you. That void is closer than close with everything. It’s pervading everything. And remember, that void is pure awareness. When pure awareness looks at a human it sees its thoughts, senses, dreams. When it’s looking at a rock, it is aware of no senses or thoughts or time, much like when we are in deep sleep. (now imagine what it’s like for pure awareness to see a plant… plants sense light so I suppose it would feel like the only thing that existed was light bathing your skin. Then I suppose there’s the roots and the other biological features…)

So the universe is nothing but an infinite play of consciousness. All is basically the dream of the one true self., the one witness, the one observer. We can become lucid by becoming aware of the true self. Feel the observer/witness in your own consciousness. Remember you are witnessing your thoughts and senses, so who is that witness? Point your focus into it. It is YOU. It is your pure awareness, pure perception. Tell me does it ever change? Does it have any qualities? Is yours different from another person’s? Is it even in time and space?

I’ve just pointed to something very important by the way, very few people notice the witness even though it’s there the whole time, closer than close.

I like to call it super lucidity.
